New Firm Creation in Telecom & Internet Sector After 1996 in Massachusetts
This thesis explores the entrepreneurial firms that were developing new technologies in the Telecommunications & Internet sector in Massachusetts from 1996 through 2002. It studies the targeted industry down to the company and product level. It answers such detailed questions as: what the majority of new firms were producing, what kinds of products attracted most venture investment, how many software firms were involved in different Telecommunications & Internet sub-segments, in which year the new switch/router manufacturers were formed, and in which town the majority of e-commerce firms were located. By tracing the technology genealogy, source of entrepreneurs and key executives, and geography of the new firms, this research also intends to uncover the distinctive capabilities of the region, and provide a new explanation to the boom of the Telecommunications and Internet firms in the region after 1996. The findings and applications from this research could be applied to help investors choose the right technology, superior location and good time to invest, and help regional policymakers create better economic development policies.
